Green Jobs Network CEO Leonard Adler, a graduate of Georgetown Law who has worked for legal technology companies for many years, recently launched ExplainLaw: Your Legal Translator.
You can think of ExplainLaw as your personal legal translator. While traditional language translation tools are plentiful, the law is, in a sense, its own “language” and the public deserves translation tools in this area as well.
As one illustration on the importance of providing such tools, non-lawyers can be at a disadvantage in a legal matter such as a contract negotiation by not having familiarity with the language of the law. ExplainLaw aims to help level this playing field and empower non-lawyers.
It provides a simple, but focused service — you enter a legal term or legal text and receive a plain-English translation.
// How it works //
You can access ExplainLaw on the web at ExplainLaw.org or via an iPhone app (download link).
On either platform the user experience is the same:
- Enter a legal term or concept (such as “1st Amendment”) or legal text (such as a contract provision). You can either type or paste text.
- Click the “Translate” link.
- Your plain-English translation will appear! You can easily copy the translation via the provided “Copy” link.
This is an initial version and there are many ideas on the roadmap. Contact Leonard via LinkedIn if you have any feedback or for partnership inquiries. Thanks!
